: Senate Bill 5766 expand the existing law prohibiting harassment, intimidation, and bullying of any student to specifically include transgender students.
: GSBA is strongly in support of SB 5766. We have always supported the inclusion of LGBTQ students in anti-bullying laws, and we know all too well the long-lasting consequences that this kind of harassment can have on our community. As a business organization with the first LGBTQ scholarship fund in the country, we are particularly interested in the well-being of our students.
LGBT youth - and especially transgender youth - are at an increased risk of being bullied. According to the National Center for Transgender Equality and GLSEN
, "75% of transgender youth feel unsafe at school and those who are able to persevere had significantly lower GPAs, were more likely to miss school out of concern for their safety, and were less likely to plan on continuing their education."
SB 5766 requires all school districts in Washington State to enact plans and policies respecting transgender students that, at minimum, incorporates the model transgender student policy and procedure created by the Washington state school directors' association.
