2017 Business Leader of the Year: Peter Shalit MD
, Peter Shalit MD and Associates
Peter Shalit’s dream of becoming a family doctor for the LGBTQ+ community began while he was a self-described “nerdy” genetics major at UW. After earning his PhD in Genetics, he entered UW Medical School and has now been a doctor for our community for 27 years. Soft-spoken, focused, hard-working, and modest, he has treated an estimated 10,000 patients in that time. Taking over a practice in 1990 he jumped right into the middle of the AIDS crisis and was one of the few doctors in Seattle willing to treat AIDS patients. In his free time, he has served on the board of Seattle Counseling Service and helped direct grants from the Beeks Family Legacy Foundation to organizations addressing animal welfare, homelessness, and LGBTQ+-focused organizations. Peter says “I’m a product of the gay community, so I owe everything to the gay community,” which is a debt he has paid many times over though his dedication and as embodied in his motto Tikkum Olam a Jewish phrase that means ‘to heal the world.’ It’s what he has spent his career doing and through his whole-hearted focus on caring for the LGBTQ+ community’s medical needs he has positively affected countless lives.
We flourish as a community. We value our local and independent businesses, support our nonprofits, and come together to recognize, value, and celebrate the strength we have when we all work together. Together We Rise
