ABOUT YOUTHCARE’S U-DISTRICT GED PROGRAM: YouthCare’s University District GED Program  is a new, structured GED program that provides GED instruction to youth from 18 to 24 who have not completed a High School Diploma or GED and who live in a transitional living program. This expansion of our GED program includes a social justice curriculum designed to support young people in exploring their identities and understanding their society, while providing them with tools to engage with their community and advocate for themselves and for the issues that are important to them.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Classroom Instructor will work in close collaboration with YouthCare’s Employment & Education Program Manager, the Assistant Teacher, YouthCare’s over-18 residential case managers, as well as volunteers to deliver quality education programs and support to participants. This position will focus on developing, implementing, and facilitating lesson plans on core academic GED subjects (social studies, science, language arts, and math). They will also support the Assistant Teacher in delivering social justice curriculum.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work with YouthCare’s E&E Program Manager and Assistant Teacher to develop a comprehensive instructional plan and curriculum for YouthCare’s University District GED Program that accommodates the wide variety of learning cultural backgrounds and educational needs of our students.
  • Administer GED practice tests and other assessments to young people enrolled in the program.
  • Manage the GED Classroom, facilitating up to 20 students at a time through instruction in a blended learning environment.
  • In collaboration with the client’s residential case manager, will work with each client to develop appropriate education-related goals and incentives to ensure that the young person is on the path to GED success.
  • Provide one-on-one and group tutoring and develop lessons plans towards GED completion, basic skills attainment, and preparation for college placement exams.
  • Track and enter student progress into a database and assist the E&E Program Manager in tracking and reporting educational outcomes.
  • Transport students in agency vehicles (vans) for field trips, educational activities and GED testing.
  • Provide on-going curriculum development relevant to student’s needs.
  • Connect students with resources that support transition to post-secondary education.
  • Orient and supervise volunteer and intern tutors as needed with support from the Volunteer Manager

QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:          

  • 1 or more years of teaching, tutoring or assistant teaching experience in the subjects covered in the GED (social studies, science, language arts, and math).
  • 2 or more years of experience successfully working with vulnerable young people or young people with various learning disabilities.
  • High School Diploma, GED or Associates’ Degree in Education, Youth Development, Human Services, Social Work or related field.
  • Experience and credentials must comply with program contract requirements

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • BA degree in education, social work or 4 years related experience.
  • 4 or more years of experience as a tutor or teacher of high school age young people.
  • Demonstrated comfort and proficiency in teaching arithmetic, algebra and geometry.
  • Demonstrated ability and skills in youth development or employment and training.
  • Familiarity with GED.com and 2014 GED test.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Valid state identification or passport.
  • Current TB Test.
  • Food Handler’s Card.
  • Successful completion of pre-service training as required by contracting agency. Training will include: New Employee Training, Cultural Proficiency training, CPR/First Aid and HIV/AIDS training, CSEC and Right Response training, Defensive Driving and 15-Passenger Van training.
  • When driving YouthCare vehicles, you must possess a valid WA State Driver’s License; meet minimum safe driver criteria established by the agency and our insurance company.
  • Computer software skills including Windows, Microsoft outlook, Microsoft Word
  • Initiative, creativity, reliability, flexibility, thoroughness
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with good quality spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • High integrity when dealing with a broad array of cultures and restricted and/or confidential information.
  • Ability to deal therapeutically with behavioral and emotional problems presented by young people and understanding of emotionally, physically and sexually abused young people.
  • Ability to coordinate overall program functioning.
  • Ability to accurately maintain and produce files, records, logs and reports.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries with clients while building trust and respect.
  • Ability to verbally and physically respond to an aggressive person in ways that de-escalate, establish and maintain staff and young peoples’ safety.
  • May be required to assume responsibilities or duties within the agency not specifically delineated in this job description for short periods of time or on an infrequent basis.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to perform range of physical motions, exerting up to 50 pounds. Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds; standing, walking, sitting for long periods of time, kneeling, squatting, and stooping; running for brief periods of time; and go up and down stairs.
