Lambda Legal seeks either a highly skilled, experienced, and motivated Staff or Senior Attorney to engage in cutting-edge impact litigation, public policy advocacy, and education furthering Lambda Legal’s mission.  This position will be based in Lambda Legal’s Midwest Regional Office (located in Chicago). The Senior or Staff Attorney will devote their time to the national and regional work of Lambda Legal to defend the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people and everyone living with HIV and to change laws, policies and minds to achieve justice. The Senior or Staff Attorney will litigate creative, high-impact cases and will advance Lambda Legal’s mission through policy advocacy and public education.

Lambda Legal is a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of LGBT people and everyone living with HIV through impact litigation, education, and public policy work. Founded in 1973 and headquartered in New York City, Lambda Legal has regional offices in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, and Los Angeles, as well as a new office in Washington, DC.

Lambda Legal’s law reform, policy, and educational work encompasses a wide range of areas critically important to LGBT people and individuals living with HIV, including federal and state constitutional law issues; fighting discrimination in employment, education, public accommodations, and housing based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and HIV; advocacy on behalf of youth in foster care, juvenile justice, and homeless care systems; ensuring access to health care; challenging bias in the criminal justice system; obtaining legal respect for same-sex couples’ relationships; securing parent-child relationships; advocating on behalf of people living with HIV; working to end LGBT-targeted harassment and violence; and furthering the rights of LGBT and HIV-affected community members with regard to racial justice; and advocacy for low-income individuals who are LGBT or living with HIV. Responsibilities:

Staff or Senior Attorney - Litigation responsibilities include devising litigation strategies, conducting litigation in trial and appellate courts, writing amicus briefs, organizing amicus strategies, supervising Lambda Legal cooperating attorneys, and investigating and developing potential new matters. In addition, Lambda Legal attorneys often consult with private lawyers who are handling matters related to Lambda Legal’s areas of expertise. The Staff/Senior Attorney will engage in public speaking, write for a variety of audiences, and help implement education strategies to advance public knowledge and change dialogue about sexual orientation, gender identity, and HIV-related legal issues. The education work may involve interviews with print, radio, television, and web reporters. Some travel is required.

Qualifications:

Senior Attorney - The Senior Attorney should have a minimum of ten years of experience in practice. The Senior Attorney should possess a high level of independence and initiative, good judgment, excellent speaking and writing abilities, the ability to produce the highest caliber legal work, creativity, and a willingness to work with others toward the most effective strategies and initiatives to advance civil rights. In addition, the Senior Attorney must have the ability to talk about legal and other complex issues in clear, persuasive terms for lay audiences.

Working at Lambda Legal requires a demonstrated awareness of and commitment to the concerns of the breadth of the communities that Lambda Legal serves. Prior work on behalf of the LGBT community and/or people living with HIV is highly desirable, as is fluency in Spanish and/or other languages in addition to English.

Staff Attorney - The Staff Attorney should have a minimum of five years of experience in practice. The Staff Attorney should possess independence and initiative, good judgment, excellent speaking and writing abilities, the ability to produce the highest caliber legal work, creativity, and a willingness to work with others toward the most effective strategies and initiatives to advance civil rights. In addition, the Staff Attorney must have the ability to talk about legal and other complex issues in clear, persuasive terms for lay audiences.
