Reports to: Director of External Relations

Function: The Major Gifts Officer is responsible for executing the agency's major gifts program.

The 2019 total private fundraising goal is $1.8 million, and the External Relations strategic plan calls for steady growth over the next several years. 

The ability to accurately set and meet deadlines, collaborate with program staff, leadership staff, board members, and other key volunteers is critical. We are seeking someone who demonstrates individual initiative, as well as the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Hours: 40 hours per week, with some evenings and weekends.

Status: Exempt

Salary- $70,000.00

Essential Functions:

  • Manage a portfolio of major individual donors in order to attain specific annual goals
  • Create strategies to identify, research, cultivate, solicit and steward current, lapsed, and potential major and leadership level contributors.
  • Strategize with External Relations Director, Executive Director, board members, and other volunteers in all aspects of donor stewardship and solicitation; provide training/coaching as needed.
  • Personally, solicit and steward major donors

  • Ensure timely, meaningful acknowledgement for all major pledges and gifts.

  • Identify donors ready to move up donor ladder, including current annual fund donors with capacity to become major donors, and major donors with capacity to increase their investment.

  • Prepare written materials, including relevant case statements and proposals, to communicate with current and prospective donors about the impact of their gift.

  • Participate in the design and execution of fundraising events to keep current and prospective major donors informed and engaged.

  • Make recommendations for policies, guidelines, and reporting standards and practice adherence to them.

Agency and team participation

  • Acquire and actively employ sound knowledge and understanding of the organization, its work, and its competitive and collaborative environment.

  • Actively participate in the External Relations team's planning and collaboration tools and processes.

Required minimum qualification

  • 4 years college degree plus 2 year directly related work experience OR

  • 2 years college/vocational training plus 4 years related work experience OR

  • 6 years directly related work experience

Preferred personal competencies, skills, and attributes

  • A proven track record of developing and implementing strategies which raised individual gifts ranging from $1,000 - $75,000.

  • Ability to build and maintain long-term relationships with fundraising constituents including major donors, board members, and key community volunteers.

  • Successful experience in coaching key high-level volunteers (individuals, board committees, task forces) to be effective fundraisers.

  • Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of individuals of varying backgrounds and positions within the agency and the community.

  • Strong track record in exercising sound, timely judgment. 

  • Competency in using data to inform decisions as well as creativity in problem solving.

  • Knowledge of Seattle/King County philanthropic community.

  • Outstanding verbal communications skills and ability to write clearly and persuasively.

  • A high degree of initiative.

  • Superb attention to follow-through.

  • Ability to project a professional image.

  • Demonstrated competency in a fundraising database.

  • Proficiency in MS Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook.

  • Must have reliable transportation to travel to meetings with donors. All travel time is eligible for reimbursement.
