It’s 2024, and Seattle Pride is on the brink of a huge milestone—it’s turning 50! Despite nearing the big 5-0, there’s no sign of slowing down yet. Instead, the anticipation is building for a celebration that promises to be more energetic than ever! As the countdown for Pride Month begins, we wanted to look at how Seattle Pride, a GSBA member since 2013, has helped our community for five decades.

History of Seattle Pride

In 1974, a small group of less than 200 people, led by David Neth, came together for the first Seattle Pride Parade. It was a humble beginning that reflects GSBA’s own story. By 1977, the event had grown, attracting 2,000 attendees, and then Mayor Wes Ulman declared the city’s first Gay Pride Week. Over the years, the event continued to expand, and in 1992, it became more inclusive, incorporating bisexual and transgender identities.

Today, the Seattle Pride Parade draws an estimated 300,000 attendees and allies, with 250 organizations participating, making it one of the largest Pride parades in the country. For its golden anniversary, the parade comes full circle and scores big as David Neth joins the parade as the Grand Marshall alongside Seattle sports legends Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe.

The Influence of Seattle Pride

Seattle Pride’s impact goes way beyond the annual parade. They are committed to supporting the LGBTQ+ community all year round, understanding that it’s not always safe to be “out and proud.” Their efforts promote diversity, inclusivity, and human rights while bringing people together and celebrating our differences.

As a 501(c)(4) organization, Seattle Pride also helps organize LGBTQ+ events like the Seattle Pride Parade, Seattle Pride in the Park, and the Seattle Pride Guide. But their support continues even after June. They host events such as the Youth Voices Writing Contest and Vote with Pride, showing ongoing dedication to the queer community.
