GSBA Welcomes Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal

Last week, GSBA had the pleasure of welcoming Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal (D-7) to our office as she meets with constituents ahead of re-election. Jayapal spoke to the group about her commitment to supporting the Transgender Bill of Rights, a piece of legislation her office drafted to encode protections for transgender people in Federal law. She also spoke to the importance of bringing investment into the district to continue Washington’s reputation as a powerhouse for innovation and economic growth. We are proud that our district is represented by an individual who supports our community so deeply.

Congresswoman Jayapal shared the stage with Christopher Street Project, a DC-based organization that builds and leverages collective power for transgender people across the country. They work to hold policymakers accountable on their commitments to trans people, and fight back against attacks on our existence. They are actively building power behind a community that has been pushed to the margins and discounted for far too long. You can donate to their effort through this link.

No Hate in Washington State, the campaign against two anti-LGBTQ+ initiatives on the state ballot, also joined the conversation. They reminded community that the rights of LGBTQ+ folks are not guaranteed even in Washington and stressed that the passage of I-001 and I-638 would dismantle decades of victories our community has fought for. The event was a joyous celebration of our community, as well as a reminder that the fight for justice is not over. GSBA looks forward to continuing these efforts by supporting pro-LGBTQ+ causes both Federally and at home in Washington State.
