Understanding L&I Premium Relief Options for Small Businesses

For many small businesses, managing cash flow can be unpredictable. Seasonal changes, economic shifts, or unexpected expenses can make it difficult to keep up with required payments, including Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) premiums.

If your business is facing financial challenges, there are options available that may help you stay on track while reducing additional costs.

L&I’s Employer Assistance Program is designed to support businesses experiencing financial hardship. This may include hardship caused by economic conditions, natural disasters, or other serious circumstances impacting your ability to pay. You can learn more about eligibility and how the program works at lni.wa.gov/agency/outreach/employer-assistance-program.

Through this program, qualifying businesses may have late penalties and interest waived if premiums are paid within a set timeframe. In some cases, extended payment arrangements may also be available.

One of the most important steps you can take is to file your quarterly report on time—even if you are unable to pay the full amount. Filing helps maintain your account status and may preserve eligibility for available assistance programs.

Delaying or skipping a report can result in estimated charges, additional penalties, and fewer options moving forward.

If your business is experiencing financial strain, taking action early can make a meaningful difference. Understanding your options and reaching out for guidance can help you avoid unnecessary costs and stay compliant.
